Can I borrow from Monash University Library?

You can borrow if you are currently:

  • enrolled as an undergraduate or postgraduate student at Monash University;
  • employed as a staff member at the university;
  • a student or staff member of another academic library participating in a reciprocal borrowing scheme, for example Sunway University College
  • an alumnus of Monash University

How many library materials can I borrow and for how long?

The number of library materials that you can borrow, and the duration of loans depends upon your course level or your affiliation with the University.

How much fines will I have for an overdue book?

A fine of RM1.00 per day will be charged to a patron who fails to return a book on the due date. Books from Reserve and Multimedia Collection on the other hand is charged RM 0.20 per hour, including weekends and public holidays.

What happens if I have accumulated fines?

If you have accumulated fines of up to RM50, your library account will be suspended and you will not be able to:

  • borrow
  • renew your loans
  • place a hold

How do I pay my library fines?

You can pay in cash to the library staff at the Reserve & Multimedia Collection Counter

What happens if I have returned library material which still appears on my library record?

Please email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or phone +603-55146157 if you have already returned the material. Lending Services staff will assist you.

How do I renew my loans?

You can only renew online through the library catalogue before the due date except for books in the Reserve and Multimedia Collection.

How many times can I renew my loans?

All Monash staff and students are eligible for 2 renewals.

Why am I unable to renew my book?

You will not be able to renew your books if:

  • the book was borrowed from the Reserve & Multimedia Collection
  • the book is overdue
  • the book has been reserved by another patron
  • your library account has been blocked for reasons like accumulated fines of more than RM50, etc
  • you have reached your maximum renewals for that item

How do I check the due date of my loans?

You can check the due date of your loans in your library account via 'My loans' on the library catalogue

Can I reserve a book and how?

Yes, you can reserve a book if the book is on loan to someone else. You can place an item on 'hold' while viewing a single record in the catalogue. Select the 'Loan requests' button, then the 'Hold' option for the item selected.

Where do I return my library materials?

Books borrowed from the Open Shelf Collection (Level 2 & 3) must be returned through the 24-hour return chutes.

Library materials borrowed from the Reserve & Multimedia Collection must be returned to the Reserve & Multimedia Collection counter at Level 1

What is the Document Delivery Service?

Document Delivery is specially designed to support staff, postgraduate and honors students’ demands for documents that are not available in the library resources. The service supplies hard-to-find documents including conference papers, journal articles and chapters from out-of-print books

Where can I book a group study room?

The library provides 4 group study rooms for students. Group study room booking can be done at the Information Desk located at the One Stop Information Centre. The librarian on-duty at the Desk will assist you

How long can we use a group study room at one time?

Student groups may book a room for up to 4 hours (2 slots) at one time

Does the library provide information skill classes for students?

Yes, the library provides hands-on Information skill classes for students. If you would like to learn how to find reliable information by using online resources, please seek assistance from the librarians at the Information Desk at the One Stop Information Centre.

How much does it cost to use the library photocopiers and printers?

The photocopying and printing services are provided by the ITS Department. Printing and photocopy charges depend on the choice of:

  • black and white, or coloured ink
  • paper size (A4 or A3)

Where are the photocopiers and printers in the library?

The photocopying and printing services are provided by the ITS Department. The Learning Commons is equipped with Multi Function Printers (MFP). View Printing, Photocopying and Scanning for more detail.

What are the library opening hours?

Where can I find the lost and found section?

If you have lost items in the library, you can check for the lost and found items with the library staff at the Reserve & Multimedia Collection area or at the Information Desk.

How do I find an item in the Library?

Search the online library catalogue to find all the materials available in the library. Detailed assistance can be found via:

  • information desk at One Stop Information Centre

How do I access online resources?

Online resources include databases, electronic journals and electronic books. To access these resources, all staff and students need an access password which is known as 'Authcate'. Computer accounts information can be found via Information Technology Services home page. Online resources are linked on the library home page

How do I find reading lists for my subjects?

Students can access their unit reading lists via the library home page or the library catalogue. To access these resources, all staff and students need an access password which is known as 'Authcate'. Computer accounts information can be found via Information Technology Services home page. Does the library have any online tutorials to teach the skills and tools needed to find and manage information?
